1.) Don’t be shy, take a peek behind the closed doors to see how the staff treats the animals and see for yourself what the standard and cleanliness of the general facilities are.
2.) Does the parlor sanitize equipment, towels, cages and counter tops?
3.) Ask how many animals are groomed per day and how many staff members there are. An average of 7 animals per staff member (for washing, drying and grooming) is good, this means they are taking the time to do the job properly and with due care. Anything over 7 animals may be production line mentality
4.) Do the staff receive ongoing training?
5.) Can you see what is going on in the back? This is a good sign that your parlor has nothing to hide.
6.) Ask around, in a local area you are sure to get some kind of idea of the reputation.
7.) Do you get a detailed report on your animal? Is your parlor just doing the grooming or are they also conducting a thorough examination for the general welfare of your pet? For example; ear infections, warts and blocked anal glands.
8.) Is the parlor air conditioned or is there a cooling system? Parlors can get very hot with the constant use of dryers.
9.) Is the equipment serviced regularly? Scissors and blades sharpened?
10.) And last but not least, is your parlor fully supervised at all times? Things can go wrong so quickly.
Now if the parlor that ticks ‘No’ to most of the above, charges R80 for Madam Fify Fontleroy and the parlor that answered ‘Yes!’ to most of the questions above charges R200, doesn’t it justify the extra money as a value add? So next time you go price shopping for your beloved babies don’t tick off the most expensive option simply because of the price. Quality is most definitely worth paying for. Especially when it comes to your pet and choosing a parlor experience that is an extension of the love and caring they receive in their home environment.
