Basset Hound

The Basset Hound breed dogs are of British descent where they were bred by the monks during the Middle Ages to use for hunting. To hone the breed they were crossed with beagles and bloodhounds.

The Basset Hound breed dogs prefer the indoors, close to their owner. They interact well with children as well as people in general. Some training is required for obedience and socialization. They are of above average intelligence, with average problem solving abilities, and average ability to learn and follow commands. These breed dogs do not bark, but rather make a crowing sound similar to a yodel.

The Basset Hound breed dogs have short legs with a heavy frame and are most noted for their heavy folds of skin and their gentle, sad-looking brown eyes. These breed dogs are usually tri-tone in color: black, tan and white. Despite their dumpy appearance these breed dogs are quite agile; noted for their ability to climb, they are difficult to contain even with fencing.

The Bassett Hound breed dogs weigh up to 60 pounds and grow to a height of 14 inches.
