Leonberger


The Leonberger originated in Germany in the 1800’s, a cross between Newfoundlands, Pyrenean Mountain Dogs, and Saint Bernards. It is named after the town it comes from Leonberg, Germany. It is a rare breed that was near extinction in the early 1900’s, but has been revitalized during the last half of this century.

The Leonberger can adapt to indoor or outdoor living, but with a strong preference for cold, outdoor living. It makes a great companion as well as family pet: a calm, friendly dog that hates to be alone, and mixes well with children . It has a high overall intelligence rating, excellent problem solving abilities, and is above average at learning and obeying commands. A unique feature of this particular breed is that it does not drool.

The Leonberger has a coat of thick, flat , smooth fur that does shed and requires a regular weekly brushing. Its colorings are fawn, golden,or red with a black face. This tender hearted giant with its love for water and compassion for small creatures reaches a height of 32 inches and can weigh up to 150 pounds.
