Maltese


The Maltese originated in Egypt sometime around 1000 BC. Its popularity reached its zenith in Italy where it was refined and breed strictly as a companion dog. Two of its very distinguishing features are its erect pointed ears that nearly meet and its supernumerary (extra) toes that allow it to literally grasp objects.

The Maltese is strictly a house pet that requires little exercise above that which it provides for itself. It makes a superb pet for singles or the elderly, as well as making a good family dog that does alright mixing with children. It has an above average intelligence rating, coupled with an above average ability to solve problems and learn and obey commands.

The Maltese has a coat of white, silky, shiny hair that does shed and requires regular on-going grooming. This breed with its long canopy of hair and alert nature reaches a height of 10 inches and weighs 4-6 pounds.
