The Mastiff is believed to be a descendent of the ancient Tibetan Mastiff (Old English Mastiffs). It was brought to England by the Phoenician sailors. In the mid 1800’s British landlords flocks and herds were being decimated by poachers.
The Mastiff was their “God send “. It would chase down the poachers and pin them to the ground until a warden or landowner arrived.The Mastiff is best suited as a house pet. It makes a loyal, calm and friendly family dog that is exceptional around children. Being a slow learner it has an average overall intelligence rating, along with an average ability to solve problems and learn and obey commands. It has a shorter life span than most other dogs.
The Mastiff has a coat of short, wiry, smooth fur that does shed, but requires little maintenance. The colorings on this large headed dog are fawn, brindle and apricot with a predominantly black face. This lovable breed with its pudgy snout and massive build reaches a height of 27 inches and weighs up to 190 pounds.
