The Newfoundland is a descendant of the Tibetan Mastiff and the Assyrian Mastiffs which were brought to Newfoundland by the Vikings. It was introduced to France by cod fishermen in the 1800’s where its good nature won it a place in the French peoples hearts. It has established itself as a durable and committed rescue dog for those stranded in water or lost in the mountains.
The Newfoundland can adapt to either indoor or outdoor living, but prefers the cool outdoors with plenty of space to run. It makes a great family dog that mixes very easily with children. One thing to be aware of with this breed is its longing to be included in families activities. If it is ignored boredom and depression will set in.
The Newfoundland has a high overall intelligence rating, along with an above average ability to solve problems, and excellence in learning and obeying commands.
The Newfoundland has a coat of dense, flat, coarse fur that is oily to the touch. It does shed and requires a regular brushing. Its colorings are either black or brown. This friendly giant reaches a height of 28 inches and weighs up to 150 pounds.
