Norwegian Elkhound

The Norwegian Elkhound can be traced back to the stone age by comparing skeleton structures. It is originally from Norway where it is the considered the National Dog. It is a power work dog used to pull sleds, and a great hunter used in tracking bears, moose and smaller game. It got its name from the Vikings because of its acute ability to track elk.

The Norweigian Elkhound makes an exceptional companion and house pet, blending easily with children. It can adapt to the indoors or the outdoors, but does require a good dose of daily exercise. It has a high overall intelligence rating, excellent problem solving ability, and is average at learning and obeying commands. In spite if its very sociable nature it possesses a real independent streak.

The Norwegian Elkhound has a coat of coarse, thick, short fur that can be most any color but gray. It does shed and requires a good weekly brushing. This breed with its acute sense of smell and powerful compact body weighs 40-45 pounds and reaches a height of 20 inches.
