The Otter Hound is a direct descendant of the Nevernais, Brittany and Vendee Griffons. It is a British breed that was used to hunt the otters that were destroying the river fish population. It has exceptional scenting ability that is comparable to the Bloodhound. It is a rare breed in both its native Britain and the US.
The Otter Hound is an outdoor dog which can adapt to indoor night living. It is highly active and requires regular daily exercise. It is a self-willed dog of large stature that needs consistent training from a knowledgeable trainer with a firm hand. It can also be a barker that is loyal and affectionate with its owner.
The Otter Hound has a coat of medium length, hard fur which has an oily waterproof consistency. Its coat is most often grizzle or light brown, and less often black/tan or tricolor. Its coat does minimal shedding and requires weekly grooming.
The Otter Hound can weigh from 65-120 pounds and reach a height of 23-27 inches.
