The Pekingese originates in early AD China, during the time of Confucius. It was a palace pet who supposedly kept away evil spirits. It was brought to Britain by English soldiers who sacked Summer Palace in Peking and found 5 Pekingese left behind. They were fascinated by its looks and endeared by its loyal companionship.
The Pekingese prefers to live indoors staying close to its master. It makes a loyal, loving companion that enjoys traveling. It is best as a pet for elderly or singles, not mixing well with children. It has been rated with an above average overall intelligence rating, along with an above average ability to solve problems and learn and obey commands. It interacts well with other pets.
The Pekingese has a coat of long, straight, harsh hair that can be most any color except white or brown. It does shed and needs regular grooming. This small dog with its calm presence covering a fiery temper, and big flat head reaches a height of 10-12 inches and weighs 6-11 pounds.
