Pharaoh Hound

The Pharaoh Hound descended from Africa and arrived in Malta by way of Phoenician sailors in 1000 BC. It is believed to be one of the original domesticated dogs of this island where it is known as the National Dog. It was the British though that came up with the name Pharaoh Hound, because of its similarity to the Greyhound.

The Pharaoh Hound can live either indoors or outdoors with a preference for warm climates, and a need for lots of running room to accommodate its highly active nature. It is rated above average in overall intelligence, problem solving and learning and obeying commands. It makes an affectionate pet that mixes well with children.

The Pharaoh Hound has a coat of short, smooth, shiny fur, and colorings of fawn or tan with white markings on the toes, chest and face. It does shed some with only periodic grooming needed. This sleek hunter with its large pointer ears reaches a height of 25 inches and weighs up to 65 pounds.
