The Pinscher is descended from the Neolithic peat bog dogs. It is from Germany where it first endeared itself to the hunters and fisherman who relished its company as a companion dog. It is believed to be a cross between the Italian Greyhound and the Smooth Dachshund. The breed also makes an good watchdog.
The Pinscher makes a fun loving, loyal pet that adapts best to indoor living. It is excellent as a companion for the elderly or singles, but does not always mix well with small children. It has an above average overall intelligence rating, along with being rated above average at problem solving and learning and obeying commands.
The Pinscher has a coat of short, thick, shiny fur that has a wide range of colorings: black and tan, brown, red and grayish blue with brown markings. It does shed, but is a clean dog that requires little maintenance. The tail is docked and the ears are cropped. This affectionate breed with its pointed ears and sleek build reaches a height of 12 inches and weighs 10 pounds.
