The Plott Hound was introduced to the US from Germany in the mid-1700’s by Jonathan Plott. It became a popular hunting dog in the Smokey Mountain region, used to track down bear and wild boar. It has an acute sense of smell and a melodic bark-making it easy to follow. It is believed to be one of the oldest US breed dogs.
The Plott Hound is best suited to outdoor living with lots of room to run and play. It does well with a job to perform- keeping it busy, and makes a loyal and affectionate companion. It also blends well with children. With early training it is easily trained for hunting.
The Plott Hound has a coat of short, dense, thick hair that does shed and needs periodic grooming. Its colorings are various hues of brindle with some black facial markings. This tough breed with its highly active nature grows to a height of 22 inches and weighs up to 50 pounds.
