The Pointer is believed to be the
oldest of the pointer breeds, originating in 1600’s Europe and brought
to Great Britain in the 1700’s where it was crossed with local breeds
and continental pointers. Later on Major Arkwright further refined the breed,
crossing it with the Greyhound, Setter and Foxhound. It is a passionate hunter
with superb endurance in hot weather.
The Pointer prefers outdoor living,
but is sensitive to cold so can adapt to indoor living if necessary. It is a
highly active breed that need lots of regular daily exercise. It has an above
average intelligence rating, above average problem solving ability, and is rated
average at learning and obeying commands. It makes a good family dog that is
excellent to have around children.
The Pointer has a coat of short,
fine, shiny fur that does shed, but requires little care. Its colorings are
yellow, brown, black or orange, combined with white. This hunter of pheasant,
quail and woodcock reaches a height of 21-24 inches and weighs 44-65 pounds.
