Skye Terrier

The Skye Terrier originates from the Isle of Skye, in Outer Hebrides off the coast of Scotland. The breed is believed to be over 400 years old, possibly the oldest of the terrier breeds. It was used by hunters to track otters, weasels and badgers. Its tenacious character enables it to stand up to foes many times its size and not back down.

The Skye Terrier has become an indoor pet, even though it is an adroit hunter ; probably due to its elegant coat of hair which its owners are hesitant to get mussed. It makes a loyal pet that is fun to have around, but does not mix very well with young children. It has an average overall intelligence rating, average problem solving skills, and an average ability to learn and obey commands.

The Skye Terrier has a coat of long, flat, wiry hair that does shed and needs regular grooming to keep the long locks tangle free. Its colorings are black, fawn, cream or deep grey. This gentle, predictable dog with its strong looking face reaches a height of 10 inches and weighs around 25 pounds.
