The Belgian Laeken dog breed, most rare of the Belgian Sheepdogs, has been used as a herder since the Middle Ages. Other areas the Belgian Laeken dog breed excels in are hunting, as a guide, search/rescue and police work. During WWI it was used for messenger and service work.

The Belgian Laeken dog breed makes for good family dogs, blending well with children. It needs to be the Alpha dog when grouped with other dogs and has the size, agility and power to command it.

The Belgian Laeken dog breed can adapt to the indoors, but thrives in the outdoors regardless of the weather. It possesses excellent ability to solve problems, learn and obey commands, and has a high intelligence rating.

The Belgian Laeken dog breed's fur is about 2 inches long with a rough, shaggy consistency. It sheds and requires regular brushing and bathing. Its colorings range from fawn to mahogany, with a black overlay.

The Belgian Laeken dog breed has a height of 22-26 inches and weights 60-70 pounds.
