Crossing various breeds of English Sheepdogs during the Middle Ages created the Border Collie dog breed. It has always been a favorite of nobility, but had its primary skills utilized to their full extent by the sheep breeders of Scotland and England. They were so impressed with its courage and endurance as well as its ability to control a herd that the Border Collie dog breed (the sheep breeders lived in the "border"lands of Scotland and England) became their breed of choice.

The Border Collie dog breed is very energetic and needs to have an ongoing outlet for this energy- with lots of daily exercise. Training is recommended, as it does need some socialization, but responds well to training as well as being suitable for children.

 The Border Collie dog breed is highly intelligent, has a good problem solving ability, and an excellent ability to learn and obey commands.

The Border Collie dog breed has a coat of straight, dense hair that grows in length to 3 inches. Their colorings are a multi-range: black, blue, or red with patches of white mixed in. It needs regular grooming and does shed.

The Border Collie dog breed, with its long stately head, weighs from 30-45 pounds and stands 18-20 inches high.
