Canaan Dog

The Canaan Dog is an ancient breed originating from Israel. The dog’s image has been found depicted on cave walls from as far back as 2200 BC. It was used by the Israelites for herding and guarding their flock of sheep and cattle. During war time they were used as messengers by the Red Cross, and for detecting mines by the army. Today they are still used for herding as well as tracking and alerting (barks a lot).

The Canaan Dog has a high intelligence level, excellent problem solving ability, and excellent ability to learn and obey commands. It is a breed that trains up nicely. It is a very devoted dog that can adapt to either indoor or outdoor living and does require regular daily exercise.

The Canaan Dog has a harsh, straight, medium length coat with tail plumes. It can vary in color: white and black, brown, red, and black-with or without white. This dog requires regular grooming and it does shed. The breed weighs 35-55 pounds and reaches a height of 19-24 inches.
