The English Shepherd is believed to date back to the Roman conquest of The British Isles. It is very similar to other sheep and cattle dogs that were companions of the invaders. Later on in the US this distinct breed was further developed by crossing Scotch Collies, Border Collies and other herding breeds.
The English Shepherd is a hardy breed that is able to adapt to either the indoors or outdoors, and makes a fine house pet who is devoted to its family and mixes well with children. It has a high overall intelligence, and is excellent at problem solving and learning and obeying commands. It is an active dog that needs large doses of daily exercise.
The English Shepherd has a coat of long, dense, coarse fur with coloring mixtures of sable/white, black/white, black/tan and tricolor. It does shed and needs a regular weekly grooming. This calm breed with its love for herding weighs 40-60 pounds and reaches a height of 18-23 inches.
