The Australian Terrier dog breed was developed in the early 1800's. They were a breed to be hunters and mainly used for catching rabbits, rats and snakes. These dogs are a cross from a number of terriers including the Dandie Dinmonts,Carins, Skyes and Yorkshire, and became a firmly established breed by the end of the nineteenth century.
The Australian Terrier dog breed is highly active but make a good house pet as they can readily adapt to inside or outside living. Their affectionate nature makes them people as well as child friendly.
These dogs are quick learners and have a high overall intelligence level.The Australian Terrier dog breed is short and compact with a long head, pointed ears, with blue/tan or clear sandy color.
They have a coat of 2 ½ inch hair that is harsh, straight and dense. They do not shed, but do require some trimming around the feet and ears.
